Wines of Apulia/Puglia

The Cantine de Falco winery is located in the village of Novoli in the Apulia or Puglia region of south-east Italy.  Salento is the heel of the Italian boot and it is from here that Salice Salentino hails.  A relatively flat limestone peninsula, Salento has a climate moderated by the Gulf of Taranto to the west and the Straits of Otranto to the east.  It has a ready supply of wind and rain with hot, sunny summers wonderful for cultivation of grapes. Negroamaro is the predominant variety for Salice Salentino but here is combined with about 20% Malvasia Nera. The latter is used in many regions in Italy for blending.  It brings depth of color and, according to some, aromas of plums and chocolate. This Falco Nero Riserva wine initially undergoes temperature-controlled fermentation for 15 days in steel tanks. It is aged in barriques for a year and a further 10-12 months in bottle before release. Dark red and powerfully aromatic with hints of vanilla, and ripe red berries it is a bold and full-bodied wine.  Pairs splendidly with roast veal, beef, venison as well as poultry and ripe cheeses. Like many of our wines this one has a long string of awards including a Bronze at the Decanter World Wine Award, 2 bicchiere from Gambero Rosso and a Gold at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.  You can check out more here.
